Alimony, on the other hand, is a court order or can be a written agreement between the parties requiring that one spouse pay money to the other spouse while the parties are separated, both during and after their divorce. There isn’t a formula for determining whether alimony should be awarded and if so, how much.  Each case is different and is factually driven, based upon the criteria outlined in Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 208 Section 34.
